Carla is a Bedford
based maker who has been designing and making glass since 2005. She
creates boldly coloured cast and fused glass. The range includes functional,
sculptural and decorative pieces.
‘I explore kiln forming techniques with glass to produce pieces
that explore the boundaries that define the social, cultural and spiritual
spaces we occupy.
Carla spent 14 years working in environmental protection before deciding
to re-focus on her early love of making. She returned to the University
of Hertfordshire in 2003 to study for a BA (Hons) in Applied Art and
graduated in 2006. She has been accepted as a Licentiate member (with
merit) by the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
Earlier this
year a new collection of perfume and oil bottles was showcased at the
British Crafts Trade Show at Harrogate in addition to her distinctive
bowls.
Carla was
selected to take part in Platform 7, the Arts Council East programme
supporting the professional development of selected visual art and design
graduates in the eastern region. The exhibition Platform 7 was shown
at Bury St. Edmunds Art Gallery and the Margaret Harvey gallery in Hatfield
and included a new piece of work commissioned by the Gallery.
Her work is now moving in a new direction, with cast and constructed
sculptural pieces which will be exhibited as ‘Under Construction’.
Her new work will be showing at the Eagle Gallery from September 2007
and at various venues in 2008.
Having moved to
a new studio at Artworks-MK in Milton Keynes, Carla is planning to run
tasters, workshops and classes from the beginning of next year for small
groups and individuals to have a go at glass. Keep an eye on the events
page!
